The town's name "Santa Anna" was derived from the territories
Comanche Chief, Santana. At one time the Santa Anna
Mountains served as a tool for smoke signals to be sent by the
local tribe.
Santa Anna has served as a passageway and reststop for
pioneers and a home base for those who fell in love with the
rawness of the terrain. As it is located in proximity with the
Texas Forts Trail, many a tough and colorful people have made
there way through the Santa Anna Mountains.
Once a community was established, the railroad came through
and the town developed into a thriving settlement. Trade
became prevalent while the railroad served as a hub for traders
and travelers.
The mountains also served as a mining location for silica sand in
the 1940's. This industry has long since been gone, but
evidence of its presence is still very apparent.
Today Santa Anna boasts as being a mecca for hunting and
fishing. Downtown Santa Anna has become a "hot spot" for
tourists and shoppers with the help of the SAEDC, merchants
and business people who have reclaimed the old historic
buildings and are establishing unique shops and eateries.
